Description:
Garages can get pretty messy and sometimes it seems overwhelming. Don't
worry, it doesn't have to be with these tips.
Removing Garage Clutter 101
There are tons of places in the house that can experience relentless clutter.
Closets are a good example of this and cleaning them out, especially after just
shoving stuff away in it, is never fun. Garages, on the other hand, can be a real
nightmare to organize. A lot of people cram boxes, rarely used machinery and
junk away in their spare garage room, hoping to one day acknowledge the mess
and fix it. Unfortunately, we as humans tend to forget about our junk and hide it
away until it becomes a disaster to organize and clean. That being said, there are
still several tips you can employ to help the process along and finally organize
things into something manageable for organizing your garage.
1. Attack The Mess In Sections
Not a lot of people do this and it's a shame as it can save a serious amount of
time. Going into a job with little organization behind your plan of action will only
lead to more disorganization and longer cleaning times. Consider your garage as
quadrants. For example, you can do one wall at a time, take a break and then
move onto the next one. It doesn't have to be a process that's entirely one clean
sweep, either. Consider breaking things up into blocks of time to reduce stress.
2. Magnets, Oh My!
A magnetic tool bar can do a lot of cool things like attract metal. “Duh”, you may
say, but did you ever think about using a magnetic strip to hold various metal
attachments to power tools? This goes for things like drill bits, sockets and screw
driver heads.
3. Cans
You probably buy some kind of food in cans. Make use of that by storing pens,
brushes, pencils, screws and more in and even better, hang those on the wall.
This is great for small stuff that floats around and can easily get lost. It's also
super cheap!
4. Garage Sales (Seriously)
This is a traditional method to reduce clutter: sell the stuff you don't need! Many
cities have a day for garage sales, so take advantage of it. Clearing out stuff you
don't need will also serve as a way to clean things, giving you a head start on
organizing your garage. Also, you can make a serious killing with the things that
you don't want. One man's trash is another man's treasure.
5. Do The Big Stuff First
When you do the sections of your garage, tackle the big stuff first. It takes up a
lot of room and typically gets in the way of other smaller items, making the job
twice as annoying as it would have been. You can even invite some friends over
to help you clean and if they find something you don't want, it's their's (taking
advantage of friends never felt so ethical).
6. On Chemicals
Chemicals are dangerous and you shouldn't be storing all of them in your leaky
garage. If a leak were to occur, it could mix with other hazardous compounds
and severely injure you and your family or worse, start a chemical fire. Your
garage isn't as climate controlled as most of your house, so put the chemicals in
a safe, more temperate area.
